Joseph J. Hall - two volumes entitled 'Cycle Tours through England, Illustrated'. Both half-bound in leather, each with typed text and photographs pasted in. The first (No. 2) is dated 1898, and has a folding map at the front. The spine is missing and the contents are becoming loose. The second (No. 3) is dated 1899 and has a signed photograph of the young author pasted in on the reverse side of the frontispiece. The binding is rubbed, but the volume is in better condition than the other. Both have the bookplate of Joseph J. Hall (of Great Yarmouth) on the front paste-down endpaper. Both volumes have an elaborate coloured title page, listing the counties covered during the holiday cycling tours (stretching from Norfolk to Wiltshire), and both have letters of appreciation bound in at the rear. Reg GAMMON (1894-1997), who was Frank Patterson's nephew, and who studied art privately with his uncle, was born in Petersfield, Hampshire, on 9th January 1894. He declined a place at the Slade School of Fine Art to pursue a career as an illustrator and writer. He drew for 'Punch', cycling and motoring magazines, and for a time after WW11 became a hill farmer in the Black Mountains of mid-Wales. In the 1950s he took up oil painting, and had a number of solo exhibitions at London's New Grafton Gallery. He died in Bridgewater, Somerset on 22nd April 1997 at the age of 103. £ 40 - 60

A large format watercolour in various shades of black, grey and white, with use of bodycolour, depicting a jolly Jack Tar riding a rear-steering tricycle down a village street while being observed by a number of local inhabitants. There is some 'browning' to the paint surface and a four-inch tear to the left of centre part of the work (near the top of the tricycle's wheel) but these blemishes do not greatly detract from the attractiveness of the image. A label on the reverse indicates that the painting was for an illustration in 'The Graphic' magazine. Signed lower right corner, but not dated, though presumably 1890/91 (see lot 201). Born in London on 21st July 1852 and studied art at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools before starting a career in book illustration. Much of his best work was done for magazines, such as 'The Graphic', 'The Quiver', 'The Strand' and 'Chums', but he also illustrated a number of boys' stories. For the latter part of his life he lived in Eastbourne, where he died on 24th January 1936. £ 400 - 500

A Burdin 'Derny' pacing motorcycle. Having been in dry storage for a while, this interesting machine is believed to be a complete motorcycle and comes with a further two units which could be used as donor machines. They were believed to have been used in the Bordeaux-Paris classic road race in the 1960s, a race that covered 560 km. Latterly, these motorcycles were used at the Reading Velodrome. A circa 1895 Quadrant Cycle Co., lady's tricycle having rebuilt rims on original hubs with 'New World Tour' 26-inch tyres fitted, 25-inch handlebars, plunger brake, rear facing feet rests, lamp bracket, original and correctly forward-fitted mudguards over the rear wheels, driving axle, chain set and inch-pitch block chain (not fitted). A circa 1881 Howe Machine Company Ltd., open front, rear-steering tricycle. An imposing and very rare rear-steering tricycle being numbered 26 and possibly dating from as early as 1880. The two supporting 45-inch wheels are in fine condition, the nearside being driven by a 1 1/4-inch chain. Steering is by rack and pinion to the rear wheel controlled by a wooden grip stirrup handle, and a twin handle on the driver's left operates the dual-spoon brake. The shaped wooden seat and back rest are new but made to pattern, the latter bearing an engraved brass plate, 'Manufactured by The Howe Machine Co. Ltd. Glasgow'. A very sound machine which was restored some time ago and has been dry-stored since. Much research was carried out on this vehicle in the 1960s by James Wood of the Museum of Transport in Glasgow. A 1923 Raleigh 'Modele Superbe' Cross-Frame gentleman's roadster with a 26-inch frame with a number of 89360, 28-inch alloy Roman rim wheels, three-speed Sturmey Archer with and original handlebar shift. Later Raleigh front lamp holder but it retains its original 'R' motif rear light holder. Mechanically very sound, paintwork and nickel-plating is nicely mellowed, original transfers clearly discernible, as is the gilt lining . Original Terry's leather cloth saddle, together with an old dynamo with front/rear lamps, believed as originally fitted. It comes with a report on its provenance and owners. A delight. £ 180 - 240

A rare circa 1952 B.S.A. 'Tour of Britain' lightweight roadster. Sold as an Autographed Frame Set (Bob Maitland, Tiny Thomas, etcetera), the 23-inch 'Reynolds 531' frame has double-butted tubes and cut-away tapered lugs. It also features period components such as Benelux Derailleur with hand control, GB 'Tour of Britain' handlebars and stem, Arret levers operating GB side-pull callipers. The frame was originally fitted with a gas bottle inflator. No original transfers, but it possess its original B.S.A. head badge. Dunlop lightweight steel rims on contemporary high flange hubs with B.S.A. wing nuts and pedals. 531 tubing throughout, B.S.A. double chain wheel (steel, not alloy as is in original specification). £ 120 - 180

A rare James Beech 'Eclipse A1' 52-inch Ordinary. Working from 39 Union Street, Plymouth between 1878 and 1879, this early machine possesses a 'V' section rim with 52 nut-adjusted spokes, a pair of single-blade forks, adjustable headstock with a circular backbone (with two steps), tapering to caster cranked forks supported by a 16-inch trailing wheel. The saddle pan is fitted with a later leather covering held by a single leaf spring with the maker and his address etched into the steel, just behind the saddle. Period 25-inch straight handlebars are fitted (renewed) ending with its original turned bone grips, spoon front brake with correctly fitted return spring and shaped lever. The 7-inch slotted cranks house James Beech original pedals (engraved on outer casing) with modern replacement rubbers fitted as original. A rare, interesting and highly rideable early bicycle. £ 1,200 - 1,600

Numbered 10274 (on the head-stock and both wheel hubs), this delightfully original machine possesses a 50-inch driving wheel, an 16-inch trailing wheel, adjustable bearings and ball bearings in the rear, circular backbone tapering to the rear forks, mounting step, original nickel-plated head pivot and cow-horn handlebars, slotted pedal cranks and original pedals, a coiled leaf spring saddle support, saddle bag, original turned bone grips, spoon brake and lever, leg guard and steering head dust cover. Much of its original black enamel finish and box lining remains together with an agency transfer (indistinct but inspect a drawn résumé) on the backbone.
