- A massive mottled spinach jade vase, 18th/19th Century, Qianlong mark, carved in relief with a band of formal taotie within stiff lappet bands and below stylised chimera handles at the shoulders, 27.5cm (10.75") high/Note: This vase was inspired by the archaic bronze hu and represents significant stylistic developments in 18th Century jade carving called fanggu (imitating Antiquity). Imperial records of the Qianlong period used the jade carving workshops in the Forbidden City to follow the styles and specifications recorded in the ancient catalogues.
