Lot 480 Description

An Edwardian mahogany longcase clock, the case in the Chippendale style, the engraved brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, the fusee movement chiming the quarters on four and eight bells; together with a typed letter of provenance inscribed Made especially for the Late Sir Claude Graham-White for his yacht Alacrity. Sir Claude Graham-White born 1879 was one of the greatest pioneers of aircraft, winning premier prizes all over the world for his feats of daring. In 1910 he received £4,000 for a 15 minute flight over Boston, Mass. and in September 1911 the Graham-White Company undertook the first letters by airmail. 212 cm high.
