Lot 258 Description
THE DONCASTER CUP, 1781
An Adam style George III silver gilt twin handled trophy cup and cover, hallmarked for London 1781, maker's mark for Daniel Smith & Robert Sharpe
The stiff leaf moulded cover with pineapple finial, the body decorated with applied Imperial eagles, berried husk swags and ribbon tied fruiting vines enclosing a medallion depicting racing centaurs opposing another with bacchic scene, flanked with twin handles modelled as a horse's head, shoulders and forelegs, standing on a stiff leaf moulded spreading plinth base, the rim inscribed Doncaster Cup 1781 and Major St Leger and Robert Auriol Hay Drummond Esq Stewards, also inscribed inside foot rim Pickett & Rundell Fecit. 49 cms high.
Condition: generally in good condition, expected wear, rim to cover slightly misshapen, approximately 115 troy ounces.
