Note: This lot is accompanied with a photocopy of the London Gazette front page from 5th January 1917, naming a list of recipients for which "His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Military Medal for bravery in the Field to the under mentioned lady, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men", it then names Staff Nurse Kate Carruthers first in a list. This medal was awarded for bravery at No. 56 Casualty Clearing Station, Western Front where she was wounded. There were only 127 awards of this type made to British & Commonwealth women during WWI.
