- Lady Grace Hay-Drummond-Hay (British, 1895-1946)

Lady Drummond-Hay was the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air, which she did aboard LZ127 the 'Graf Zeppelin' accompanied by her cat.
This 1928 epoch making flight marked the beginning of trans-oceanic air travel. LZ127 flew 5,987 miles in 112 hours between Fredrichshafen and New York, 11-15 October 1928. At the time this was the longest distance ever made by air without landing.
As a special correspondent for Hearst newspapers, Lady Drummond Hay travelled extensively, when in Tokyo she was feted, entertained by numerous dignitaries, met lady aviators and the young Kajikawa Yutaka whose letter herewith contains secret hopes and dreams and expresses the idea that Lady Drummond Hay may be able to help him market his designs to a wider, less conservative people than those in Japan.

Charles James Fox was one of a number of Arts & Crafts artists based around the new development in Letchworth Garden City. Other artists included A. J. Bamford, Spencer Gore, Harold Gilman, William Ratcliffe, Frank S. Ogilvie and sculptor Onslow Whiting. C. J. Fox was very much central to this grouping and his studio was used for group meetings.

The living room, looking out to the garden, the Townsend house, Stotfold Bury, Stotfold, Nr. Letchworth, signed, oils on canvas, 17 1/2" x 23 1/4".
Provenance:
Given directly by the artist to Charles Townsend and thence by descent.
Charles Townsend was a chemical engineer and editor, married to Eleni Zompolides who was an artist/designer at a book binding works associated with Douglas Cockerell. The family were central figures in the emerging Arts & Crafts movement in Letchworth and knew most of the leading figures, including the Parker family and Harold Gilman. Zompolides was the model for Harold Gilman's The Blue Blouse (Leeds Museum & Art Gallery).
The family were good friends of the Camden Town artist William Ratcliffe and he use to walk over the hills from Letchworth to visit the family in Stotfold.
This work shows the influence of the Camden Town group with its distinctive palette. The leading contemporary critic Frank Rutter wrote:
'tainted with the disease of purplitis. Messrs. Spencer Gore, Robert Bevan, William Ratcliffe, and many others of this group of artist, who attach themselves with real passion to the pictorial interpretation of their own daily surroundings and of modern life, all look up on the world with purple spectacles.' (see Rosamond Allword, William Ratcliffe, North Hertforshire District Council, 2011, p.24 and 'Art & Artists', The Observer, 14 July 1912, p.9.) £ 8,000 - 12,000

- Conroy Maddox (British, 1912-2005)
Untitled, circa 1937-39, signed, watercolour and gouache, 14 3/4" x 11 1/2", unframed.
This is one of Maddox's 'deformed' still-life studies, with which he experimented mainly between 1937 and 1939, while enrolled at the art academy in rue de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Since, as Maddox recalled, the tutor paid little attention to his students, it was possible for the students to dispense with formal rules and create imaginative drawings. 'I used the nude,' Maddox explained, 'only as a basis and I invented transformations which made my sketches surreal'. The current work is just such a transformation. A feature of Maddox's late-1930s work is the lined patterning that appears on the object on the left. This recurs in a work of 1937, Jeune Fille. Also significant is that the signature is not followed by a date and that it incorporates uppercase letter 'D': both are features exclusive to some works of that early period.
We are grateful to Silvano Levy for his assistance in cataloguing the present lot. This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné. £ 300 - 500
