Illustrated:
For a similar poster design see 'Film Posters of the 1950s' by Tony Nourmand and Graham Marsh, 2000, pg. 60

This film was one of Preminger's most controversial films as it dealt with heroin addition, one of Hollywood's taboo subjects and consequently pushed the boundries of film censorship in the 1950s.

The poster and title sequence for this film also helped make the work of Saul Bass notable in the film industry. It is now recognised as one of the most controversial, famous and influential opening sequences in history and depicts the arm of a heroin addict. This caused a sensation in Hollywood especially teamed with this ground breaking poster which also helped film posters break away from the 'traditional' 50s film poster depicting key scenes or characters from the film.
