MARIAN KRATOCHWIL (Polish, 1906-1997) A brass engraving plate for printing two Don Quixote subjects, 'Don Quixote and Sancho Panza' and 'Don Quixote and Sancho allowing Dapple and Rocinante to Drink', Poland 1936/7, 14 1/2" x 20"
This was the artist's examination piece. The plate was made from brass and not the usual copper, therefore it was harder and less likely for the incisions to become blunt. The next two lots show good results from the plate when Kratochwil used it to create a print of either side in 1961.
