Lot 744 Description

1937 Austin 7 Cambridge Special, Reg. No. 269 RDV. Chassis no. 274114. Engine no. M275241. First registered 18th June 1937. This car was made in the 1950's as a special for racing from an Austin 7. The Cambridge description refers to the Cambridge Engineering Co. of Surrey, circa 1930's - 1960's. This company produced 'special' body designs and various modifications to the chassis, braking and engine, to make the 7 more competitive for racing. Cambridge works in Surrey are mentioned in Bill Williams book 'Austin 7 Specials'. The car has an original aluminium 'Cambridge' body on ash frame. It has lowered front axle linkages, using patent 'Cambridge' link parts, also 'Cambridge Bowdenex' cables, together with early scuttle fuel tank. It also has a Zenith downdraft carburettor, a four branch 'bunch of bananas' exhaust system and patent 'speedex' aluminium cylinder head. The vendor purchased the car in 1989, in an unrestored condition, and is partly restored and requires finishing. There is a V5 with this car.
